It was bound to happen eventually: Canadian TV is looking to duplicate the success of MTV's Jersey Shore. A Toronto-based knockoff called Lake Shore has just announced its own cast of cartoonishly outrageous party people. And frankly, they make MTV's knuckleheads look like proper British royalty.
But here's where the show strays from the original concept: Rather than exploiting a single ethnic stereotype, these eight cast members proudly (and loudly) represent eight different ethnic backgrounds. There's Sibel, the Turk; Joey, the Italian; Anni Mei, the Vietnamese; Tommy Hollywood, the Czech; Robyn, the Jew; Salem, the Lebanese; Karolina, the Pole; and Downtown D, the Albanian. While their racial makeup may differ, their immature behavior and ignorant beliefs are scarily similar.
In the extended promo, no one's tolerant of anyone else -- Sibel hates Jews, Downtown D disses homosexuals, etc. -- but they seem to agree on how to have a good time. Simply stated, they all place a high premium on getting drunk, picking fights, standing up for themselves and hooking up in public.
Oh, Canada. This is one area where copying America just isn't worth the trouble. Then again, Lake Shore's ratings will probably prove otherwise.
